Lineage

The High River Karate Club began instruction before 1977 as a Chito-Ryu style club. In 1977/78, the Club elected to split off and train in the Shotokan style under O’Sensei Masami Tsuruoka, known to most as the father of Shotokan Karate in Canada.

O’Sensei Tsuruoka regularily visited Alberta to provide clinics for affiliated clubs, including at the YMCA Downtown Calgary, where the High River club members generally attended.

O’Sensei Tsuruoka passed away in 2014, and since then the High River Karate Club, Tekka Karate Club in Vulcan, and the Mount Royal Karate Club in Calgary have formed the Sankaku Karate Association, which continues to teach traditional Shotokan style karate, though is independent of the current Tsuruoka organization.

High River Karate Club is a member of Karate Alberta.
